MBizM and Monash University Malaysia continue collaboration to equip engineering students with Lean Practitioner skills and certification
A Lean Practitioner workshop for 20 undergraduate and postgraduate students at Monash University Malaysia, built on the Lean they had already studied and aimed at the PeopleCert IASSC Certified Lean Practitioner™ examination.
On 3 October 2026, MBizM Sdn. Bhd. ran a Lean Practitioner Workshop at Monash University Malaysia for 20 undergraduate and postgraduate students who had already completed the Lean Manufacturing subject. The session filled gaps in their Lean knowledge and prepared them for the PeopleCert IASSC Certified Lean Practitioner™ examination.
The workshop
Petaling Jaya, 19 October 2026. MBizM Sdn. Bhd. continues its collaboration with Monash University Malaysia through a specially curated Lean Practitioner Workshop designed to complement the Lean knowledge students have already acquired through their academic studies and prepare them for the PeopleCert IASSC Certified Lean Practitioner™ examination.
Held on 3 October 2026 at Monash University Malaysia, the session brought together 20 undergraduate and postgraduate students and was conducted by MBizM’s Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Trainer and Consultant, Mr. Arvinash Singam, with coordination by Ir. Ts. Dr. Ho Kok Hoe, Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia.
Participation in the session was intended for students who had already completed the Lean Manufacturing subject, ensuring that they entered the programme with a foundational understanding of Lean principles and concepts before advancing to certification. Building on this existing knowledge, the session was specifically curated to address areas that may not have been covered in depth during their academic learning and to familiarise students with the syllabus and expectations of the Lean Practitioner certification examination.
The initiative provides students with an opportunity to complement their engineering education with additional knowledge of Lean methodology while working towards an internationally recognised professional certification.
Preparing engineering students for industry
The integration of Lean knowledge into engineering education reflects the importance of process improvement and operational efficiency across today’s industrial landscape.
Lean principles are no longer limited to traditional manufacturing environments. Organisations across sectors apply Lean approaches to identify waste, improve workflows, strengthen quality, and enhance process performance. For engineering graduates entering the workforce, an understanding of Lean can complement their technical expertise and provide them with a broader perspective on how engineering knowledge can contribute to organisational performance.
Professional certification can further support this development by providing students with a structured pathway to demonstrate their knowledge of Lean methodology. The PeopleCert IASSC Certified Lean Practitioner™ qualification is designed to establish proficiency in Lean methodology and its application, providing an additional competency that can support students as they transition from university to professional environments.
Building on existing Lean knowledge
Unlike a standalone introductory training programme, the Lean Workshop was designed as a supplementary learning experience that builds upon the students’ existing academic exposure to Lean.
The session covered key concepts and tools aligned with the Lean Practitioner syllabus, including Introduction to Lean, Gemba, Kaizen, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), the 3M framework of Muda, Mura, and Muri, 5S, Bottleneck Analysis, Continuous Flow, Takt Time, Value Stream Mapping, Flow and Swimlane Diagrams, Spaghetti Diagrams, Jidoka, Andon, Poka-Yoke, Root Cause Analysis, Standardized Work, Visual Management, Short Interval Control, SMART Goals, and PDCA.
The content was curated to help students identify potential gaps in their existing knowledge, strengthen their understanding of key Lean concepts, and become more familiar with the areas covered within the Lean Practitioner certification syllabus.
The session combined lectures, discussions, interactive activities, quizzes, and assessments to encourage active participation and reinforce learning. Kahoot quizzes were incorporated throughout the session to help students review key concepts, while a mock examination at the end provided an opportunity to assess their understanding and become familiar with the format and types of questions they may encounter during the actual certification examination.
From classroom learning to industry readiness
The workshop reflects the value of connecting academic learning with industry-relevant professional development.
For engineering students, exposure to Lean methodology can provide an additional perspective on problem-solving and process improvement. Concepts such as Value Stream Mapping, Bottleneck Analysis, Standardized Work, Root Cause Analysis, Poka-Yoke, and PDCA can help students understand how organisations identify inefficiencies, address process problems, and sustain improvements.
This knowledge can also complement students’ understanding of Industry 4.0 and digital transformation. While digital technologies provide new capabilities for collecting data, automating processes, and monitoring performance, Lean principles continue to provide a structured approach to understanding processes, identifying waste, improving flow, and creating value.
Developing these capabilities alongside their engineering education can help students enter the workforce with a broader understanding of both technical and operational considerations.
Continuing the MBizM and Monash University Malaysia collaboration
The latest session builds on the ongoing collaboration between MBizM Sdn. Bhd. and Monash University Malaysia, bringing Lean Six Sigma and process improvement knowledge closer to students as part of their professional development.
The collaboration reflects a shared interest in equipping students with knowledge and competencies that complement their academic studies and prepare them for the expectations of a changing workplace.
For MBizM, supporting students in developing Lean capabilities provides an opportunity to contribute to the development of future engineers and professionals who can apply structured improvement thinking within their respective organisations and industries.
Following the session, the participating students will continue preparing for the upcoming PeopleCert IASSC Certified Lean Practitioner™ examination. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to earn the Lean Practitioner certification, further strengthening their professional credentials as they prepare to enter or progress within the workforce.
As the students continue their preparation towards the certification examination, MBizM looks forward to supporting their Lean learning journey and to further strengthening its collaboration with Monash University Malaysia in developing industry-ready talent.
